What Balls To Use In A Ball Mill?

Blog 4960

Ball mill grinding balls are the media for grinding materials in ball mill equipment, mainly used for material crushing, mixing and refining. Its performance directly affects the grinding efficiency, energy consumption and product quality.

Balls used in ball mills are usually divided into metal grinding balls and non-metal grinding balls according to the material. Let’s take a look at the various ball mill grinding balls and their respective roles and characteristics:

High chrome steel balls: chromium content ≥ 10%, suitable for processing high hardness ores, such as iron ore, copper ore, cement clinker, etc., as well as the need for long time continuous operation and high requirements on the life of steel balls.

Medium chromium steel ball: moderate hardness and wear resistance, suitable for processing medium hardness ores, such as limestone, bauxite, etc., can take into account the wear resistance and economy.

Low chromium steel ball: chromium content of 1%-3%, lower cost, wear resistance is poor. Suitable for processing soft ores, such as coal, gypsum and so on.

Forged steel ball: made by forging process, good toughness, but wear resistance is not as good as high chromium ball. Suitable for processing high hardness ores, commonly used in small ball mills that require long life.

Casting steel balls: produced through the casting process, low price, but easy to break. Applicable to a variety of ore grinding operations, generally used for primary grinding.

Ceramic Balls: including alumina ceramic balls, zirconia ceramic balls, silicon carbide ceramic balls, etc., no metal pollution, suitable for fine and ultra-fine grinding operations, as well as materials sensitive to metal contamination, such as food, pharmaceuticals, electronic materials and other areas that require a clean environment.
Silica balls: cheap but easy to wear, suitable for occasions that do not require high purity.

Grinding ball size

Generally the size range of ball diameter in the cylinder is 10mm-100mm, different ball mill models have different ball loading, and need to maintain a certain proportion of different ball diameters.

Coarse grinding (50-100mm): suitable for crushing large particles of materials, such as ores, cement clinker, etc..
Fine grinding (10-20mm): used for high-precision grinding, such as ceramic powder, medicine, nano-materials and so on.
Laboratory ball mill (3-40mm): due to the small amount of samples processed, smaller grinding balls are usually used, such as 3mm, 5mm, 10mm, etc.

There are large and small steel balls used in ball mills, and this is not an arbitrary arrangement. Large, medium and small steel balls are used in conjunction with each other to improve the grinding efficiency and ensure the quality of the product. Large steel ball negative wheat impact and crushing of large pieces of material; in the middle of the steel ball to undertake intermediate tasks, and further crushing by the large ball broken smaller particles; small steel ball is responsible for grinding fine particles, the material for fine grinding (grinding), to achieve the desired fineness requirements. Do not know how to match the ball mill steel ball, pay attention to my detailed understanding.

Maintenance and Inspection
Wear Monitoring: Regularly screen grinding balls to remove broken balls and oversized balls.
Surface treatment: Some high chrome balls are quenched and tempered to improve performance.

During the operation of the ball mill, the weight and diameter of the grinding balls will decrease due to wear and tear, so new balls need to be replenished regularly. After about 3000 hours of operation, it is necessary to stop the machine to clean up the steel balls, remove broken balls and replenish with new balls.
