What is High Weir Spiral Classifier?
High weir spiral classifier is a kind of equipment used to classify solid particles in the slurry, and its main feature is to utilize the difference of the settling speed of solid particles in the slurry to classify them. The sand return end of Chunlei spiral classifier is increased with sand return automatic lifting device, by which the configuration of big scoop head of ball mill can be canceled to make the ball mill equipment run more smoothly.

Working Principle of High Weir Spiral Classifier
High weir spiral classifier adopts to feed the finely ground slurry into the flume from the inlet located in the middle of the settling area, and below the inclined installation of the flume is the slurry grading and settling area, and the spiral rotates at a low speed, plays a stirring role to the slurry, so that the fine particles are suspended to the top, and flow to the overflow weir and be overflowed. Coarse particles sink to the bottom of the tank and are transported by the spiral to the discharge port as return sand. The position of overflow weir is higher than the bearing center at the lower end of the screw shaft and lower than the upper edge of the screw at the overflow end. The high weir type overflow weir is higher than the rotating shaft of the spiral, but lower than the upper edge of the spiral at the overflow end. The area of the settling area of this kind of classifier is larger than that of the low weir type, and its weir height can be adjusted within a certain range, i.e., the area of the settling area can be adjusted and changed within a certain range, so that the particle size of the classification can be adjusted, and it is a kind of commonly used equipment in the grinding cycle.

Advantageous features of High Weir Spiral Classifier
- The sand return end has increased the sand return automatic lifting device and canceled the configuration of the big spoon head of the ball mill, thus slowing down the unbalanced impact on the big and small gears.
- Generally, it can save 1~1.5 degrees of electricity per ton of ore.
- Avoiding the frequent maintenance of the big spoon head.
- Slows down the unbalanced impact on the large and small gears of the ball mill.
- Nylon bearings are used at the overflow end of the big shaft, which not only reduces the cost and lengthens the service life, but also makes the maintenance and replacement convenient.
- The blade adopts automatic cutting down, neat and beautiful.

FAQ – High Weir Spiral Classifier
1. What is a High Weir Spiral Classifier used for?
A High Weir Spiral Classifier is mainly used in mineral processing to separate fine particles from coarse material by sedimentation. It’s commonly applied in closed circuits with ball mills, or for washing, dewatering, and desliming ores like gold, copper, iron, and zinc.
2. How does a High Weir Spiral Classifier differ from a Low Weir Spiral Classifier?
The key difference is the weir height at the overflow point. In a high weir type, the weir is higher than the lower bearing center, providing a longer settling area and finer separation. Low weir types are used for coarse separations. High weir classifiers offer better control over overflow fineness.
3. What particle size can a High Weir Spiral Classifier handle?
Typically, it handles feed particle sizes up to 3 mm (depending on the model). The overflow particle size can range from 0.15 mm to 0.07 mm (100–200 mesh), making it ideal for fine classification in grinding circuits.
4. Can I use a High Weir Spiral Classifier for sand dewatering?
Yes. It is widely used for sand dewatering and washing in construction, mining, and aggregate industries. The spiral slowly rotates to convey settled solids upward while excess water overflows the weir, achieving effective dewatering.
5. What materials are the spiral blades made of?
Spiral blades are typically made of wear-resistant materials such as Ni-Hard iron, high-chromium cast iron, or rubber-lined steel. This extends service life when processing abrasive ores. Custom options are available based on material abrasiveness.
6. How do I choose the right size High Weir Spiral Classifier?
Selection depends on feed solids percentage, desired overflow fineness, tonnage, and ore type. Key parameters include tank width, spiral diameter, weir height, and slope angle. You can contact us with your material characteristics – we offer free sizing calculations.
7. What maintenance does a High Weir Spiral Classifier require?
Routine checks should include:
- Spiral blade wear (replace when worn)
- Gearbox oil level and condition
- Lower bearing lubrication and sealing
- Liner and weir plate wear
- Drive motor and belt tension
Most components are easy to access for fast field replacement.
8. Can it be integrated with a ball mill circuit?
Absolutely. The most common application is in closed grinding circuits. The classifier receives ball mill discharge, separates fine particles as overflow (to flotation or leaching), and returns coarse material back to the mill – improving grinding efficiency.
9. Is a High Weir Spiral Classifier better than a hydrocyclone?
It depends. Hydrocyclones handle higher tonnages in smaller footprints but require more head and are sensitive to feed pressure. Spiral classifiers offer lower operating cost, no pumps (when gravity-fed), simpler operation, and better performance for finer separations with moderate tonnages. Many plants use both for different stages.
10. What’s the typical delivery time for a High Weir Spiral Classifier?
Standard models (single or twin spiral) are usually delivered in 25–40 days after payment confirmation. Custom sizes or rubber-lined versions may take 45–60 days. Expedited options are available – contact us for current lead times.
